In the heart of Central Illinois lies a golfing oasis masterminded by the legendary coach Mike Small. Since 2000, Small has nurtured the University of Illinois golf team, nearly clinching a Big 10 Championship if not for a twist of fate involving his teammate Steve Stricker. The team's rise to dominance can be attributed in part to their state-of-the-art practice facility, the Demian indoor golf practice facility. This $5.1 million haven, expanded in 2022, boasts a 6,000 sq ft indoor short game area that rivals the challenges of the great outdoors.
Small's meticulous attention to detail is evident in every corner of the facility, from the synthetic turf mimicking real grass to the addition of a cutting-edge Sam putt lab for stroke analysis. The hitting bays, equipped with TrackMan technology, provide instant swing feedback while braving the harsh winter winds of Illinois. But the real jewel in the crown is the outdoor practice facility, a $3 million marvel inspired by Augusta National and co-designed with none other than Steve Stricker himself.
This 24-acre paradise offers players a 360° golfing experience, complete with meticulously maintained tees, fairways, greens, and target greens. The facility's design allows for the recreation of any shot imaginable, ensuring players are prepared for any challenge on the course. The recent $5 million renovation of the team's home course, the Atkins Golf Club, further solidifies Illinois' reputation as a golf powerhouse. Small's vision and dedication have transformed this unlikely location into a golfing mecca, where players can hone their skills and strive for greatness amidst the cornfields of Illinois.
